چکیده

The objective of recent research in fair queueing schemes has been to efficiently emulate a fluid-flow generalized (weighted) processor sharing (GPS) system, as closely as possible. A primary motivation for the use of fair-queueing has been its use as a means of providing bandwidth guarantees and as a consequence end-to-end delay bounds for traffic with bounded burstiness. The rate guarantees translate to scheduling weights which are set when admission control is done. A consequence of fair queueing systems closely emulating GPS is that when one or more connections are not backlogged, any “excess” bandwidth is distributed to backlogged connections in proportion to their weights. However, weights are set based on the longterm requirements of traffic flows and not in any state-dependent manner that reflects instantaneous needs. In this paper, we question the notion that queueing systems should closely emulate a GPS system. Instead of emulating GPS, we propose three modified scheduling schemes which preserve the rate guarantees of fair queueing (and hence preserve deterministic delay bounds) but adaptively redistribute the excess bandwidth such that either losses are reduced or delays equalized. We compare the performance of the proposed schemes to that of fair queueing using different traffic sources such as voice and video, as well as sources which have aggregate long-range dependent behavior. We find that the proposed schemes, in comparison to packet GPS (PGPS), reduce packet losses and curtail the tails of delay distributions for real-time traffic and hence permit the use of significantly smaller playout buffers for the same network load.

Adapting Fair Queueing to Improve Loss, Delay, and Admission Control Performance

Fair queueing provides minimum rate guarantees and is fair by being rate proportional, i.e, excess bandwidth due to non-backlogged connections is distributed in proportion to rate guarantees. State dependence of the scheduler is restricted to whether specific connections are backlogged or not. In this paper, we propose three alternate scheduling mechanisms that can provide better service, in te...

Design and Evaluation of a Method for Partitioning and Offloading Web-based Applications in Mobile Systems with Bandwidth Constraints

Computation offloading is known to be among the effective solutions of running heavy applications on smart mobile devices. However, irregular changes of a mobile data rate have direct impacts on code partitioning when offloading is in progress. It is believed that once a rate-adaptive partitioning performed, the replication of such substantial processes due to bandwidth fluctuation can be avoid...

Predictive routing to enhance QoS for stream-based flows sharing excess bandwidth

We propose a new routing algorithm based on online estimation of the link load dynamics and prior information on flow holding times. The motivation for this proposal lies in supporting traffic flows such as VBR or associated with rate adaptive applications. Such traffic requires a minimal guaranteed bandwidth, but can see improved performance when sharing excess bandwidth not used to meet guara...

Supporting Adaptive Flows in a Quality of Service Architecture

Distributed audio and video applications need to adapt to fluctuations in delivered quality of service (QoS). By trading off temporal and spatial quality to available bandwidth, or manipulating the playout time of continuous media in response to variation in delay, audio and video flows can be made to adapt to fluctuating QoS with minimal perceptual distortion. In this paper we extend our previ...
